I have three SIGs for personal protection (P226, P220 and P6), they are in my own opinion the best pistols on the market. Very reliable, accurate and with a very smooth trigger pull straight out of the box. I have'n had any malfunctions with any of them, and they seem to be happy with any ammo I use in them.

The best deal out there is probably the P6, they were all over the place for $299 when they were imported and you can still find them for $350-$400. It's a semi-compact pistol with a single stack mag so the mag capacity is not the best, but it's an excellent carry gun. For home protection, you can't beat the P226 with a 15-round mag.

I guess I better add that some people don't like the newer models with polymer frames, some of these are said to have some reliability issues. I'm allergic to polymer guns so I haven't tried them myself, but I know that the alloy frame guns are a very safe bet.

I own a number of Sig handguns and have had ZERO problems with any of them. Mine are not ammo fussy, and really perform well. I use two of mine for home protection. I have fired over 7K rounds through my 229 without a single hiccup!! Your son could do a lot worse than a Sig pistol.
