I was in a local Cabela's store with my son last weekend, he was looking for a pistol for home protection and the clerk behind the counter mentioned that the Sig Sauer's, in his opinion, were the most reliable, they could handle any ammunition you wanted to use without any problems but he could not say that about some of the other well known brands. Any comments or opinions?

I am a fan of the Sig brand. I am even more a fan of HK. So many great models out there!

I have three SIGs for personal protection (P226, P220 and P6), they are in my own opinion the best pistols on the market. Very reliable, accurate and with a very smooth trigger pull straight out of the box. I have'n had any malfunctions with any of them, and they seem to be happy with any ammo I use in them.
The best deal out there is probably the P6, they were all over the place for $299 when they were imported and you can still find them for $350-$400. It's a semi-compact pistol with a single stack mag so the mag capacity is not the best, but it's an excellent carry gun. For home protection, you can't beat the P226 with a 15-round mag. I guess I better add that some people don't like the newer models with polymer frames, some of these are said to have some reliability issues. I'm allergic to polymer guns so I haven't tried them myself, but I know that the alloy frame guns are a very safe bet. |

I own a number of Sig handguns and have had ZERO problems with any of them. Mine are not ammo fussy, and really perform well. I use two of mine for home protection. I have fired over 7K rounds through my 229 without a single hiccup!! Your son could do a lot worse than a Sig pistol.

I have a SIG P210 (Swiss) which is the finest target grade military gun I've used.
I have a SIG P229 in .40S&W for carry and protection. Absolutely reliable and well made. I have a SIG P226 in 9mm Luger for home protection. Absolutely reliable and well made. A student in a recent class had one of their 9mm Luger P938 ultra compact pistols. It was well made and a good compact consideration for Concealed Carry.

Well, the sad truth is that (because of safety and reliability issues) I would not carry a Luger Parabellum pistol or use it around the house for protection.
The design of pistols is a moving target, and with improvements things have changed over time.. None of this stops my fascination and preference for collecting them... If it's any consolation, you'll find many of the parts of the M1929 Swiss Lugers were made by Sig...

What I contest is "finest target military grade". I'll concede they are very good, maybe on par with the Luger. But I don't find them better. |

My go to pistol is a Sig 229 in 357 sig with a spare .40 barrel too. I took a tactical pistol course using the pistol Wednesday and ran 350 rounds thru it over 4 hours with absolutely no issues.

Thanks for all the replies, I will forward them to my Son. The one he is interested in, I believe, is the Sig P226, 9mm, stainless with Rosewood grips and I believe listed at $1129. but it sure is a great looking pistol.

The P226 is a very popular, light weight, intuitive to shoot, easy and logical designed to disassemble, clean, and inspect properly. (it's chambered is several different calibers and there is a .22 conversion kit.)
It's a good vest gun, good for concealed carry, but with it's 4" barrel, it's going to be hard to shoot accurately. It's made for close quarters, self-defense use. It's not particularly picky about ammo, either - handles target loads and hot loads well, although you may want rubber grips. ( I have large hands and find that gun harder to grip - my little fingers ends up under the magazine). I can't shoot the PPD one with glove on, either. Personally, I prefer the Springfield XD series ( I like the grip safety's ) |

Thanks Mac Cat, appreciate the first hand experience. That 4" barrel would be a problem for me too, my preference has always been towards the longer barrel lengths. I'll pass this one on to my son also.

I loved Cabala's near Austin, too.
They have an upscale resale section with some impressive collectables. Last year, they had 3 $10,000 class Lugers. Now it's changed out to cowboy rifle and pistol sets, highly engraved and plated. |
