My father's Luger cost him 35 dollars back in 1948. A box of ammo was thrown into the deal. Even though it's a shooter and not a collector's piece, he did pretty well.

That would depend on the luger; $35 was a week's pay for a lot of people in 1948. Many lugers can still be had for a week's pay today.

Again, depends on the pay and the luger.

Just for S&G, I downloaded the Military Pay Scale for 1971 (my last year of active duty, L/Cpl in USMC)...

$333.60/mo, $166.80/payday for me (L/Cpl under 2)...

I seem to recall $197/payday (every two weeks) but I was overseas at the time...Maybe overseas pay???

Anyway, that works out to $2.46/hr for a 40 hr week...A draft beer at the Enlisted Club was $.25...

We were always broke...

You missed the point by going into the decimals- my point(s) were/are:
1- it depends on the "quality" of the luger- the OP did not mention if it was a POS or a Gem.
2- it depends on how much one was making in 1948 or today
3- a common, mis-matched or ugly luger may or may not be a "good" or appreciating investment.

Yes, I "make" about $350 a week now-take home, thanks to Uncle Sam.

Some people make 1000 a week, and that will buy the same luger that was $35 in 1948, JMHO.

I would get about $300 more a month except for that POS Reagan and his WEP legislation...
