There are some weapons identified by serial number range that are "accepted " as Custer pieces.
Years ago I was at Springfield Armory museum and they had a beat up Indian decorated trapdoor carbine.
It had been surrenderd at some point and they had dug it out of stuff they had in the basement.
Interesting was that this was after the big fire where they found new artifacts at the battle site.
There were a number of 45/70 casings displayed they felt had come from this piece.

I was out there last summer and was most impressd by the scattering of markers where guys had died singly or in groups of two or three.
