Early Marked German Imperial Bayonet~

I was just informed that it was made for Pioneer Troops and Woodworking, a rare model~

This is what is known as a "Butcher Blade" bayonet. If memory serves, there was much controversy over its use by German troops. You will see many of these out there with the saw teeth ground off, perhaps by post war treaty?

Oddly enough, I know what Pioneer Troops were...But what were 'woodworking'???

There was the usual talk of being treated less than ideally should a soldier be captured with one of those in his possession. I don't think those saw-backed blades continued thru the entire first war, and certainly did not occur during the second.

It's a model 84/98 nA S. The unit marking is to a Fortress Communication unit garrisoned in Koenigsberg.

I think it's a neat bayonet! I have a US M-9 bayonet (I think current issue) with a 'sawback' blade, but the teeth are very fine and not as protruding. It also has the wire-cutter scabbard so maybe the M-9 'sawback' is for metal cutting rather than wood...
