Was DWM required to import mark "GERMANY" on any guns beyond those sent to US distributors?

I can't see detail of the proof marks on this pistol, but it's likely a commercial rather than a military contract gun.

Perhaps the Luger stolen from Lowell Thomas while he was there covering Lawrence of Arabia (good story, at least...)?

It might be possible to tell more with the serial number (especially from somewhere like distributor records)...

Try and take some pictures in shaded natural light (not flash) and use the closeup setting to get sharp focus on markings, particularly proof and anything on the rear of the frame near the toggle. Also, any marking on top of the chamber or on the barrel.
