Al, you had it almost right, took me a second to figure it out!!

You had forum and it should be forums and you had lugerforums instead of lugerforum, in other words, one "s" was swapped!

The folks at Simspon LTD just sold a BUG-proofed M1906 AE (with 4" 9mm barrel) for $ 2450.00 asking price.

If I recall, the 4" 9mm barrel is more rare and this gun was in a bit stronger condition that yours...so my guess for your pistol would be in the $ 1800-2000 price range...just a guess, though.

p.s. Do your wooden magazines have a small "flaming bomb" proof stamped into the wood ? If yes, I have seen such AE magazines in like-condition as yours sell for $ 200 and a bit higher...or are yours stamped with "Germany"...?

Hi Pete--Thanks for the response and very interesting info. There are no markings on the magazines. The gun has nice straw color that doesn't show up too good in the pics. Any idea what the "3" "P" and "5" mean in the well pic?? Thanks--Al

Can some one tell me the significance of the horizontal C-N stamping next to the lug, along with the BUG proofing?? Is it common to have both?? This gun also has a Marbles (Sheard) front sight so could it have been sold as a target pistol?? At a recent gun show I saw another 1906 AE, sn 28xxx,(mine is 48xxx), that also had a Marbles sight.

Crown/B and Crown/U are found on the breechblock and left receiver, Crown/G is added on the barrel. B is the overload test proof specified by the proof law of 1892; it also denotes a completely finished pistol. U represents the word Untersuchung (inspected). G is found only on the barrel, and represents the word Gezogen (rifled). 172,28 is a bore diameter measurement in accordance with English proof laws of 1894. It is equivalent to .30, but measured as the number of lead balls of the stamped diameter which weigh a pound. Its the same system from which we get our
shotgun "gage".

The c/N next to your recoil lug is an odd one. There's no doubt that it has nothing to do with proof marking. Frankly, if workers' marks had any system going for them, nobody knows about it nowadays. Sorry that thats not more satisfying.

Marbles and Shearers front sights are seen sometimes as aftermarket replacements in the US, they were not assembled onto the gun as original equipment. Thats a pretty nice example of a 1906 American Eagle, I don't have any argument with the value Pete put on it. The Marbles front sight will not materially detract from its value.
