I've had this pack of sturdy cotton swabs in my desk at work for at least 20 years, and finally thought of a good use for them. They are great for reaching way down into magazines and pulling out the carbon that builds up from repeated shooting. Shown below with a Hi-Standard magazine, I'm sure they would work equally well for Luger mags or just about anything else.

Nice re-discovery, Mark. Q-Tips are hard to beat, but these are Q-Tips on steroids! If you run out, try a medical supply store. I received a handful, after I asked, at the Dr's office during a visit...

I clean my mags very rarely, and only the ones I use at the range, in any case I rinse them with some sort of tetrachloroethylene which is a solvent used to take stains off clothes; but I would never use it on Luger mags with wooden bottoms.
When I've got to clean a very dirty gun I always start with a piece of rough cloth soacked with tetrachloroethylene. Sergio

I keep an ample supply of those wooden Q-tips in my shop.....actually, the very same brand. In the Medical office, they are used for many things....noses, ears, etc. They do a better job than the short plastic stemmed Q-tips. It is like using pipe cleaners for cleaning the slide and frame grooves.
