New challange! Old problem!

Did it break in the middle or near the end?

I have seen old spiral springs, but don't recall what they were for...clock maybe? Old wind-up time clocks, like used in factories in 1900's...I have one on my wall, four feet high, two key wind-up mechanisms...I knew a guy who repairs them (he even has his own forge/foundry for casting iron parts)...I bought my time clock from him...
