Sounds like you need Hoppe's #9 or mineral spirits with a toothbrush to get that stuff off...

Ed's Red works as well, and it's cheap enough for dunking large parts/subassemblies or even the whole gun. Just be careful with painted areas, I use the formula without the acetone, but it may still affect paint. The only place on a Luger would be the text behind the safety, so I would be careful with that.

I have the barrel and extension soaking in KROIL at the present, let is sit overnight and use a brass brush on it in the morning, no hurry.
