Fred -

A shim in the trigger slot is the way to go. You can also cut a small piece of aluminum can and wrap it around the tip of the trigger lever, to take up the slack.

If you want to do a permanent modification to the trigger parts, the proper way is to solder a shim to it, not by bending and tweaking.

In any case don't worry too much about damaging the lever, since it is an unnumbered part that can be easily replaced if damaged.
