Doug,
I disagree. I drilled a hole in my flint hand axe to attach a thong so that my knuckles would be the only things dragging the ground. Therefore, the attachment point preceeded the lanyard.

I simply tied a thong around a non-specific point on my axe handle and snuck up on you whilst you drilled your hole.... so maybe not?
