The grips look like original grips, which were very worn and someone "freshened" the checkering. Note that near the edges they are inconsistent and there are areas, (like the closeup near the sideplate) where it looks like the freshening cuts weren"t quite true to the original line.

Doug, I'm not seeing that. Rather, many of the diamonds are flat on top--check out the right side grip--and the area you mention looks undisturbed to me. I think what you're seeing is that the crossing sets of lines are not cut to the same depth, and the ones that go l.l. to u.r. need to be deeper. Notice also that the edge of the left grip along the front strap is not completed, there is un-cut wood about 3/16" before the pattern starts. I posted a big blah-blah about checkering the other day, and I think this falls into the "good enough" category of wartime Q.C.., if these are original.
