Dana may be better able to answer your question, but when I was importing that Borchardt replica the 'agent' in Japan told me it was a US federal law, that replicas had to have a red barrel/snout.

I noticed that eBay requires it on all toy/model/replica gun sales.

I posted whatever it was that took off the paint (without marring the plastic) in my Borchardt thread...

But at least one company [Marushin] ships their MP40 replicas with red plastic barrel ends (not painted) so I made one up out of black Delrin to replace it...
