It's identifiable by several characteristics, including the location of serial numbers, the Crown/N commercial Nitro Proof marks and it's caliber. It was not made for military issue. You may also find the word "GERMANY" or "Made in GERMANY" stamped on it's frame, indicating it was made for export.
