Hi Andrew, I agree with David. Buy the gun for $1,000.00 and pay the sales tax. You're getting a great deal and Tennessee needs the money. Regards, Norm

+1 $1k seems like a price that would be very fair to you; be careful not to "negotiate" yourself right out of a deal! Walking away from this one would seem like a waste of shoe leather (sorry, postie).

I suppose you all pay whatever a salesman quotes as the sale price???

Why would he have to pay sales tax if he's buying from an individual??? I'm in NYS and if you buy a handgun from an individual, there is no place to pay the 'sales tax'. The pistol permit office won't take it, and there is no walk-in sales tax office listed in the phone book...Only dealers have to charge/file sales tax...

Well, it depends. If it's a used car or similarly marketed item, then no. If it's a genuine article and they're asking half price, straight up, then much more likely.

I think a moderate approach was appropriate and it turned out successful here in this deal. I'd have been concerned that an $800 counter offer might have bordered on the insulting; and if the seller discovered the ultimate worth of the pistol afterwards, there might be hard feelings. I think any seller will entertain a counter offer to their asking price, at which point they can counter with a new asking price; yup, negotiation. I feel it's OK to get a really good price by negotiating for something, but would feel weird about coming away too successful as a result of a seller's ignorance. But there is plenty of middle ground and room for rationalization! Presuming the seller is an adult, it's really up to them to do the research to determine what they are selling, or get some help doing it. A seller's failure to use due diligence this way will reap its own reward, likely in a reduced price. I'd just try to stop short of robbing war widows, etc.

Anyway, a handsome pistol...I'd have bought it( though I might have paid $100 more for it!) with little hesitation.

I like to give a low-ball cash price [show the cash, not a check] to see how frantic they are to sell...

All kidding aside, there's a thread in the Krieghoff forum (IIRC) about a member who bought two Lugers from a guy standing near the wall at a gun show...It makes interesting reading...

Hi Rich, I negotiate prices for a living, and I have to tell you that until you have dealt with Iranians and Indians, who have developed chiseling into an art form over many centuries, you don't know what negotiating is. However, when someone offers me something for half what it's worth, I pay the asking price and say "thank you".
Best regards, Norm
