Although the background is outdoor, this may also be a "studio" shot. Studio photographers often had props on hand to enhance the photo. Things like a holster to wear.

I agree. The only surviving pic I have of my active duty military is a studio shot, with a rifle [M-16] that I had never even seen before...

(A real one...in person, I mean)
