Bob, that is essentially true, I have heard the story from vets enough that I know it is true, in addition guns that were captured may or may not have a matching magazine, in war time, if your magazine gets lost or damaged, you aren't likely to get it renumbered to match...
A un-numbered magazine is seen in several variations, all depending on when made; you see un-numbered Erfurt and DWM wood bottomed (and remember that DWM commercials weren't numbered), then later the 42, S42 and eagle 655 unnumbered; I have had some of each and they sell well, I assume for the purposes that Geo said above.
