Dan,

Welcome to the Forum. Most consider the 1936 to be the best rust blued finish. In early 1937 they switched to the salt blued finish. Read the FAQs in this section.

The marking along the right side are acceptance and proof marks. An Eagle over a 63. We abbreviate that as E/63. There should be one on the left side of the barrel, close to the base. The last to the right is the firing proof, should be one on the rt. side of the barrel, and on the left side of the breech block too. All of these change over time, and help us with the period of the piece.
