New Luger help needed

Hello all,

This is my first luger I know very little about them but i'm excited to get some info from you guys on it. I recently picked up a 1936 s/42 in 9mm all matching #s except the magazine thats about all I know about it. Any help with value, origin basically anything would be great.

very nice gun! I think the 1936 is one of the nicest of the Nazi era Lugers (cause I have one too haha). The G and K dates are too, but a lot scarcer and more expensive.

I would have expected the correct mag to have a BLUED folded tube. Perhaps you can work a trade here on the Forum, for the correct type, in your S/n suffix. TH

I believe his magazine has a blued folded tube.

Ron, The type of tube color depends on the suffix. Usually the L-Block is the change point between the blue and nickel finish. BUT not always.

Thanks for the replies guys. What can you all tell me about this gun. What do the markings mean and an approximate value would be appreciated. I don't want to sound to ignorant but what are you talking about with the magazine?

Dan,

Welcome to the Forum. Most consider the 1936 to be the best rust blued finish. In early 1937 they switched to the salt blued finish. Read the FAQs in this section.

The marking along the right side are acceptance and proof marks. An Eagle over a 63. We abbreviate that as E/63. There should be one on the left side of the barrel, close to the base. The last to the right is the firing proof, should be one on the rt. side of the barrel, and on the left side of the breech block too. All of these change over time, and help us with the period of the piece.

Dan,
On the front of the frame, under the serial number, there should be a small script letter. F to P , no J, That would help date the piece too.

Hi Dan,
There are two types of tubes used for Luger mags. The first is like yours, two pieces of folded sheet metal. The second type is an extruded one piece tube with no seams. The tubes are nickel plated or blued. There are three types of bottoms, wood, aluminum, and Bakelite or plastic. The configuration of the mag, tube type, color, bottom, along with the serial# w/suffix, and acceptance stamps, helps us date it. There are also a few more paragraphs of smaller details...

Thanks for the info its great to start to understand some of this stuff. All the marks you guys described are there and the letter on the front of the frame is a k. Any one have a guess as to the value i'm really curious? I appreciate all the info so far.

My value guesstimate is $1600-$1800. Dealer prices are higher.
