Doug,
The very dark blackish color over the pits are a natural evolution from rust. Bluing, whether it be rust or salt, is a form a controlled rust. In the pitted area, rust has formed in the normal red color, but over the years, it has formed a seal against the steel and turned black, therefore, a form of protection to the steel. I would not recommend trying to remove this natural bluing, just leave it as is and keep oil on it. Marvin |
