Luger rework

I have a 1914 DWM Luger with a 1920 government breech tag. The frame number is 7097. The receiver number is 5384. There is a 97 on the trigger side plate. Beside that number is what appears to be an eagle stamped over the numeral "6." Does that mean it is possibly a Simson rework? I have a photo, but the instructions in the Stickies do not seem to be up to date. I find none of the links listed in submitting new threads.

The Eagle over 6 is an inspection stamp that was used at Simson. Probably a Simson trigger plate on a rework. 1920 is the German property mark during the Wiemar era.

Sounds like it's a mismatched receiver. Do other parts (barrel, small numbered parts) match the frame?

There should be a suffix letter under the frame serial number. It's part of the serial as well.

Barrel number matches receiver number. Can.t make out the number below barrel number, but it ends in a "2."Whole bunch of 77s on toggle and extractor, which match only themselves and no match to anything else on the gun. I guess I have a mismatched mess, but I do like the Simson stamp. Anyhow, it's still a pretty good shooter. I like it.

The number below the barrel serial number could be "8.82" which would be the barrel gauge for a 9mm Luger.

Sounds like a mis-match toggle train. So... a "shooter" it is. Have you taken it out and fired it yet? How's it function? One great thing about a mismatch is that you don't have to worry about the value dropping if a part breaks. Takes the anxiety out of firing it!

I've fired it several times, but what I have found is that the more modern Mauser Lugers are better shooters than the WWI models. Therefore, I am concentrating on Mausers because I'm more interested in shooting than in safe queens. Besides, Simpson Ltd. likes to see me increase their profit margin.

Does it have a sear safety (see FAQ) if unsure what a sear safety is.

The 1920 is a gov't stamping, not for reworks, etc, although if it is the only number there,it could very well be the date.

Simson did rework, they also supplied accepted barrels for the police and so they shipped the guns as 7.65mm and the police changed the barrels.

Gun does not have a sear safety. I checked the post pics tutorial stickie, but every time I try to retrieve the picture from my PC picture file, it states "Download Failed." Seems like something wrong between Forum Browse and my PC. It makes me wonder if I have to re-size the picture to get it to make the journey from my PC to the Forum.

If Simson did an extensive rebuild on a Luger, would they have ever mated an unmatched frame and receiver together?
