Default The Wolf

Just finished reading The Wolf (How One German Raider Terrorized The Allies In The Most Epic Voyage Of WWI) by Richard Guilliatt and Peter Hohnen (2010). It's a good read. Probably a few Lugers went on the mission.

Reading another good book, A Measureless Peril (America In The Fight For The Atlantic, The Longest Battle Of World War II) by Richard Snow (2010).

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/16/bo.../Thomas-t.html

Lots of interesting detail, like U-123 entering New York Harbor at night on January 14, 1942, and what the commander wrote about seeing the city.

More surface raiders, World War II. Stier against Stephen Hopkins.

Great thread....I had been looking for reading suggestions in another thread, wherein I brought up the following:

"I just read a short but enjoyable book by Donn Pearce, entitled "Nobody Comes Back." It's a fictional account of sixteen year old infantryman who served in Belgium near the end of WWII. He was captured twice by the Germans and managed to escape. No mention of Lugers anywhere but I really enjoyed it, nonetheless."

Once notable thing is that he lost his weapons and came across a German "burp gun" and sniper rifle. When he finally gets back to his side and is asked to turn them in for U.S. guns, his comment is something to the effect of "I'd rather keep these. They're better than ours."

The obvious WW1 maritime adventure story is "The Emden-Ayesha Adventure" by Hellmuth von Mucke. This book, which is mentioned by Jan C. Still in "Imperial Lugers", has a strong Luger connection (although these are called revolvers in my translation). It's the story of the landing party of the commerce raider Emden, stranded on Direction Island after the Emden was destroyed, and their epic journey home to Germany. It's a really great read. Regards, Norm
