Alanint, Thank you for pointing out my error. It should have read excluding the magazine. As far as the writing on the inside goes, I have now viewed it a number of times and find it subjective on some of the letters and/or numbers. As such I have attempted to provide as clear of an image as possible and you guys that know what to look for can assist and deiced what it possibly means...

I think I am seeing his name; O.B. Butler followed by 2nd Lt. above his service number which shows him to be an officer. The rest looks like unit markings of 3 rd Battalion ???? Infantry and the last line is perhaps a town or district and it looks like a date ending in 45
