I do not believe these Police 'Banners' were "reworks". They were new manufactured, direct from factory contractual procurement.

Hi Francis, I wasn't asking about the sear safety, but about the safety bar, shown in the white on my 1939 42 (see picture). Regards, Norm

Ah, I misunderstood. A valid question and I do not know the answer. In my books, these 'Banners' are pictured with the safety bar in the white. To be honest, I never paid attention to it 'till now.
Took the left grip off and the safety bar is all blue.

Francis... My guess is that perhaps this was a Russian capture and got dipped.

Hi Dave,

Thank you, it certainly could be. I have had it in the collection for some twenty years, so probably pre-dates the collecting community becoming aware of the "Russian captures". Most likely done here in the good ol' US of A.

Francis.... Very interesting gun. I have 2786w (1939 E/L) and the muzzel kind of looks like yours although the saftey bar is in the white. I checked 4 Banners from 1939 and 2 have polished muzzels and 2 do not.

If in fact it is a Russian dip gun they I would think it was done in Russia rather than here. My understanding is that the dipping was done soon after WW2 ended as the guns were put in storage for future use. Do not have documentation to back that up but it sure makes sense to me......

Dave, I really do not know anything about the history, facts of 'Russian capture', 'dip' pistols. It seems to me that the awareness of these programs have only recently come to light. Like in the last five or ten years. Started hearing about them after the fall of Soviet rule and a bunch of flotsom started washing up on our shores.
If the pistol presented is indeed a refinish, I believe it was simply done right here. I do not see anything about it that would indicate that it came out of one of the 'krains, 'stans or commie democratic republics. No evidence of import markings or such. Of course it could had come in immediate post war, 1950's, under the wire, diplomatic pouch, good ol' boy means, GI rod & gun return, etc. or some way not to be import marked.

I have never actually "collected' Lugers, simply acquired them here and there if they struck my fancy....while on the trail of a "Radom". At one time I thought that it would be nice to have one each example of the main manufacturers of of the Luger. What with the price of Simsons, Vickers, etc., that will most likely not happen for me. But, maybe some day I'll get lucky....you know....the Blind Hog thing.
