Short haircuts are in vogue for soldiers nowadays. Kind of harkens back to the prohibition of beards and long hair in hand to hand combat situations...you do not want to give the opponent something to grab on to and secure an advantage. "White sidewalls" have been the mark of a combat soldier for quite some time and the trend has been for ever shorter haircuts as the mark of a "gung-ho" troop. Plus, in the current desert warfare environment, water and shampoo are pretty low down on the totem pole.
Having said that, "Gunny" is now a popular icon and needs to look the part.
