Since the pistol is in such nice condition and the grips are original, I would venture to guess that maybe someone has lightly sanded the checkering (just a maybe). I agree with Lonnie that Hugh can do a wonderful job on the grips and get them back closer to original. The new cut chckering does not have to be full deapth and this will make them look great.
