Your byf stands for Mauser and made in 1942 (42); and in collector parlence, it is a luger and also folks call them magazines instead of clips (although I use the term clip periodically). Ed

Thanks for all the responses guys. This is great stuff. I wish I knew more of its history other than it was brought back from France. Dad's gone so I cant get any more info on it. I was hoping there was a way to trace back the serial numnber some way but guess thats not likely being its a military issue.

Hey Blue, there should be a letter on the front of the frame which is part of the serial number. If you could supply a picture, I could give you an idea when it was completed.

Blue, 42 byf serial number 9217g was completed about May 1942. Hope this helps!!
