Newbie questions

Alright I have been offered a WWI navy luger. I have seen it once and I will be going again and negotiating on the price but I was wondering if I should be looking at anything specificly upon seeing it again. I can not tell you much about it as I was not looking at the markings or anything the first time but I noticed right away the beautiful finish on the gun it has a very nice original blue finish and it has not been reblued, the seller mentioned it was number matching.

What should I be ready to pay for number matching WW1 navy luger with original finish?

and did kriegsmarine officers ever use WW1 lugers in the second world war? (it has no 3rd reich markings I remember that)

Seems like not much data to base an estimate on.
Search Gunbroker and GunsAmerica for Navys for ideas of what they are asking and what they are bringing. I doubt that many are selling these days. Look for numbers matching, overall and bore condition. Seems like MissMatched roaches were bringing $1500+ while nice ones were asking closer to $5K. Also check Simpson Ltd, then take off 25% for an idea.
But these are sort of a specialty, and priced accordingly. I avoid them just because I'd have to pay real money and there are too many forged ones that could bite you. In short start educating yourself.
Do you know/trust the seller? Can you get a 3 day return priv? If so shoot us a bunch of pictures so someone more knowledgable than myself can weigh in.

David thank you for your answer. I know the seller very well( militaria collector and a buddy of mine) He aquired the piece from old time collector who got the luger around 40 years ago. I will visit my friend in start of october and I will be sure to take alot of pictures then and refreshen this thread up.
But do you have any idea if these lugers were used in ww2?. I have heard that US soldiers captured artillery lugers in some of the fighting places in the war but I have never heard stories about the Navy ones.

I believe that they were also used in U-boats, WW2, etc, but that's a bit over my pay grade here. Better let the scholars answer that one. It is certain that WW1 pistols did frequently see action in WW2.
One thing I will say that IMHO the WW1 NAvy is about the perfect balance of barrel length and true early-Luger craftsmanship.
I have a mismatched one that is a dream to shoot.

You might find out who the old time collector was. We have a few who are not especially honest. So whom he bought it from should be considered. Bill
