Default Take down lever spring

I've been trying to install a take down lever spring in a WWII era Mauser P08. I made a small punch to fit the hole in the frame and had no trouble driving out the stub of the old spring. I could not get the new spring seated all the way down. The pin on it goes half way into the frame without too much trouble but then it gets stubborn. I tried inserting the pin from the outside of the frame with the same results. I suppose I should get the micrometer out and measure the pin.

Is there a trick to this or do I have a poorly fitted spring?
