Should I buy this 1941 byf

I have a chance to acquire my second Luger (you said once you start, to cannot stop)....a 1941 byf P08. The gun is a numbers matching piece except the mag which is a blue, alu. bottom. Bore is very good. Pictures are below. Is the gun correct as to proofs by SN for 1941 production? Since the SN is 1145y, I assume it was built towards the end of production for that year. Since it is a war year, I assume that a ton were made so this one is not rare. Are the wood grips correct....I have seen some 1941s with black grips. What mag should I have for this? What is this mag from? What would this P08 be worth? Any help you could give would be appreciated! I sure do like the forum....I read it every day. You do a great job with it! Thanks!

The wood grips are /could be correct. You need to look at the inside to determine i9f correct to the gun. As price it would go for $1200 in my area.

I'll let the more knowledgable members answer your specific questions, but if it came my way I'd place a buy-it price at $1300. Give or take a hundred.
I think it looks like a nice piece, but let's see what the critics have to say...

Hi Dave, 41 byf, serial number 1145y, was completed about September 1941. The magazine was produced 1n 1936 for an S/42 (2904n as a spare, indicated by the plus sign). That pistol was completed in about September 1936.

Any fxo magazine with a black plastic bottom or an unmarked aluminum would be proper for the byf.

The pistol looks good to me, but check the internal parts for a match to the serial number.

If the pistol is all matching, the value would be between $1300 and $2000, depending on the amount of original finish remaining.

Frank....Thank you very much for your info. I offered $1500 and the owner took it. If I find the correct Mag, I assume it would be worth about $2000? I don't plan on selling....I believe I will collect more P08s.

By the way, the grips have E655 proofs and faint partial numbers which match this gun....is there some material that can be rubbed on the wood to bring out the number?

no, it doesn't work that way for a non serial numbered magazine for a gun, perhaps a extra hundred or so, but not $500.....

A serial numbered magazine matching and is real would increase the amount by $400-$500 but not just a bakelite one.

Be advised that a nice bakelite is worth $150-$250 depending on condition, so your value would be increased by what you paid. although you could sell the "wrong" type for $75-$125, depending on condition etc.
