Default lanyard loop removal

Info request

For target shooter luger project . I would like to remove the lanyard loop and fill in the milled recess and wire holes to have a smooth appearance at the back of luger frame

Plan to use a frame with no stock lug to have matching smooth appearance , so would be dwm mfg like early P08 military

Anyone know of gunsmith who does welding fill in work suitable for the lanyard loop removal and milled recess fill ?

Also - will reblue in the welded area show any traces of the alteration ? for this is rust blue or salt blue better or ? best

Welding effect on the frame stress areas like toggle ramps and toggle stop areas ?

thanks
Bill

Bill, You might be better off to find a Mo8 Bulgarian frame, which was made without a lanyard loop or stock lug. Most are also missing the removable lanyard loop at the bottom of frame. TH

How about using a Mauser Parabellum frame? No lanyard loop, no stock lug, smooth and salt blue.

Vlim, THe Parabellum is a long frame and a standard PO8 barrelled receiver will not come forward enough to be flush at the front. It is set up for a grip safety and would be difficult to change to the the standard PO8 type. And finally, It will not take standard PO8 grips, so it sounds like an expensive way to go, even if you could find one at a reasonable price. TH

Tom, correct, but since it's a target luger project, most of these issues can be dealt with quite easily

lugerdoc , vlim, thanks for your comments

lugerdoc - please put me on your watch list for bulgarian frames

vlim - I agree MP would be a good choice , but the rear toggle is too hard metal to machine slot for rear adjustable sight - have you seen any MP custom lugers with a adj rear sight solution ? also , seen any target grips for these ? would the MP barrel ring before the threads make it difficult to make a custom barrel ?

thanks
Bill

Bill,

Yes, Mauser did a couple of target versions, including ergonomic grips, adjustable rear sight, adjustable trigger pull and special bull barrels for target shooting.

The alternative threading of the MP should make it easier to thread and install the barrel, at least that was what they had in mind when they made the changes.

Vlim,

thanks for the MP target sales info copy - had not seen that one before

seems like Interarms kept the awareness level low for the few target models it received - or maybe I was looking the other way at that time

last one I saw for sale was in australia for $3500 about 10 yrs ago on a webpage - and it apparently sold at that price

I think Mauser missed the point in many ways - biggest was the rush to market the swiss model - and later obsession with the high dollar commeratives - and of course failure to produce 45 models with a 45 frame profile

have you seen any aftermarket customized MP lugers ? - seems to be ignored for custom/target - seems like swiss model used could be good donor source - but need some sort of target grips like have been offered on germany gun auction web page , these hide the absence of the P08 front grip frame bottom bump

Bill,

There is a custom sports model in the collection of a German weapons specialist that features modified grips (smoothed) and an added barrel weight.

Mauser did manage to produce its entire production line at a profit, so at least from an economic point of view they did allright. The main problems were related to expected changes in gun laws (particularly in Europe) that never really materialized and the challenge to come up with a production method that was financially viable. Producing a .45 ACP version of the Luger is a challenge to say the least. Even the development of a reliable 9mm version from the Swiss 06/29 design was troublesome, something that even convinced the Swiss army to follow a different path (and not tell Mauser about it).

The sports model is shown on the website of Teuto-Arms in Germany (www.teuto-arms.de):

Vlim -

From the toggle on the Luger in the pic you posted (with the slabside barrel and attached weight), that seems to be a very early Luger...

Is that takedown lever with the "dimple" in the round end common to these Lugers???

maybe this is a mauser parabellum prototype target gun

looks like an MP frame ( has the right side rail lump and the thin ramp rails ) and with a long receiver ( old or new )

and using maybe a cannon asy from 1900 model

most interesting is the extended rear toggle with maybe an adjustable rear sight
similiar to that on the few MP target guns actually marketed by mauser

At least the frame of the above, including the "dimpled" TD lever, are from a Mauser Parabellum. TH

The cannon assembly and the dished toggles are also from the normal postwar Mauser production. They probably used the dished toggles from one of the commemorative versions.
