I am new to this forum and thought maybe somebody could help me. I can not find a luger that looks quite like mine. Grandpa took it off a nazi officer and does not look like anyone else's that I have found on the internet. If you have seen one or know some info for me I would be greatly appreciated? Here it goes gun and mag have matching numbers, G stamp on barrel, S/42 9950 with swastika on left side and eagle with the inscription on the medalan GOTT MIT UNS

Interesting Luger you have there. It is a "G" date P.08 made by Mauser. It is hard to see from the photo, but it looks like part of a German belt buckle was attached to the grip. Gott Mit Uns (God With Us) was worn on German belt buckles. I know it was worn during WW1 and WW2, possibly earlier I'm not sure. It looks like it was a 2 piece buckle, and the inside circular portion was taken off and attached to the grip. The other side appears to have the cockade from an NSDAP visor cap. I highly doubt these were attached by the German soldier, but most likely by your grandfather after he captured it.
Very interesting and unique piece of history. |

Due to the photo not able to tell of the military belt buckle in WW I or WW II. It most liklyhood it is done the later war.
These symbols were attached to captured war booty, as mentioned above by Rylan, by the GIs, never by the Germans. It was a very common practice, especially with leather holsters. The serial number on the front of the frame under where the barrel meets it, may have a lower case letter, if so that is very important concerning the manufactur of this Luger. If there is a letter suffix it will also be on the matching numbered mag. If youn would provide that letter info (if there is a letter), it woiuld be appreciated by many of the members of the forum. Nice G-Date, with family history. Joe

The insignia on the right side of the pistol is from a political leaders visor cap. It is the cockade which would be centered on the wreath on the hat band

Not a problem wayne... everyone makes mistakes... except my late Uncle Angelo... as a preteen he once told me that he had a lot of faults, but making mistakes wasn't one of them

The G date was made in 1935 by Mauser without the interesting grip enhancements. TH
