Due to the photo not able to tell of the military belt buckle in WW I or WW II. It most liklyhood it is done the later war.

These symbols were attached to captured war booty, as mentioned above by Rylan, by the GIs, never by the Germans. It was a very common practice, especially with leather holsters.

The serial number on the front of the frame under where the barrel meets it, may have a lower case letter, if so that is very important concerning the manufactur of this Luger. If there is a letter suffix it will also be on the matching numbered mag. If youn would provide that letter info (if there is a letter), it woiuld be appreciated by many of the members of the forum.
