Default K dated S/42

Hello everyone I am new to the forum and I look forward to learning what everyone has to share.
I am posting photos of my K dated S/42 that my dad gave to me A few years back. He bought this from the vetâ??s wife for $15.00 back in the late 60's only after he talked here out of throwing it out. The vet that brought it home was a colonel in North Africa.

Kevin, welcome to the Forum and presenting your very nice "K" date luger rig. You got yourself a gem of a collector's item at a bargain basement price as "K" date rigs such as this with one matching magazine sell for over $3K and higher. According to Jan Still's Third Reich Lugers, your "K" date is of the second type with mixed scriptic and gothic S letter proofs. It is estimated that only 3550 of the second type were manufactured, in the serial range 1700-5250. These are interesting Lugers, representing Mauser's first production model coded for 1934 in violation of the Treaty of Versailles. They are characterized by several peculiar features, such as variable barrel band lengths, the "K" date notch on the receiver front at the barrel attachment and coming and going of the so called Mauser "hump" on the frame rear. "K" date Lugers are much in demand and you have a beauty! The original magazine tube was chrome plated and not blued like your extra magazine.

Kevin, I agree a beautiful K date, The only exception I see to being matching are the mismatched grips, numbered in the DWM style. If I were you, I'd be on the look out for either a set of unnumbered "commerical" grips or a set with the strange S code markings inside. I do have a vg right side unnumbered grip panel marked with the K date S inside, but the matching condition left grip has the large digit Mauser #57 inside. Lugerdoc

Thank you Went

Thank you Lugerdoc. I greatly appreciate your expertise but regardless these grips have been on here for 65+ years so that’s how I will keep it.

Kevin, I'm well aware that your matching magazine is correct and chromed. The extra magazine is for a later Mauser luger and in no way depreciates the value of your "K" date.

Kevin, a very nice "K" luger, and very nice addition to your collection. Don't often get to see a outstanding find like yours. A real treat.

Thank you JMV375

Thank you Jan. I hope you add this info to your data.

drbuster I greatly appreciate your info and didn't mean to imply that you didn’t know what my correct mag is. But to my surprise that it was chrome I have always assumed it was stainless steal. Thanks again.

Thank you rhinemann

Kevin,

You have a beautiful K-Date numbered 1919 with one matching mag and proper

small numbered grips.

I could hardly believe it when I saw the serial number because I have number 1920.

Maybe someday we can meet and put them side by side.

Thank you for sharing it with us.

Kevin, really nice K-Date - CONGRATULATIONS!!! I agree with Jan regarding the grips. The number size is correct in my book! The larger number size came in the later versions!

The side plate has "S" in book. I saw a very faint "ghost" S on the 2nd picture.....is that a "S" or my illusion?

Kevin let me add my congrats and welcome to the Luger forum.

I am not only interested in the Luger, but very much so in the vet who brought it home as my father was also part of the North Africa invasion. If you are acquainted with the family of the vet, could you please inquire as to what his unit was during this campaign? My father was part of the 39th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division.

Thanks in advance.

John I will try to get more info but if I can it wont be for awhile. This luger came home with my uncle's father inlaw they have been devorced 15 years atleast and I dont see him verry often or even if he remembers any thing about his former father inlaws service record.
