Default Nazi Luger ID

I have a 1940 luger with Nazi markings. Are there any records of who had what gun. I would just like to find out who carried this gun through the war. I am newer to forum and to Lugers so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I would just like to find out a little history on this firearm.

Thanks,

Mike

Default :( Sadly Mike, thre are no such records...

About the best you can hope for is the month/year it was manufactured unless there is bonafide documentation with the pistol or other hard evidence such as unit markings on the gun or it's accessories. In rare cases, perhaps a little more info is available if the piece is unusual in some respect.

Download the identification sheets in the technical information section and when you have collected all the info they ask for report the info here and we will tell you all we can about your new Luger.

Also include if there are any accessories with the Luger such as the number and type of magazines, type of grips, holster or cleaning rods/tools and the marks on them.

Welcome to the Lugerforum! Please take a few moments to browse the site and fill us in on yourself by opening a user profile...

Please go to the Technical Information section on the left side menu and go to Markings, and there you will find proof marks covering most of the Lugers.

Your Luger will have some of these marks, check them out and they will tell you some of what you need to know. After that you can repost here and report what proofs your luger has and we may be able to provide more info.

Also in Tech. Info. section are some indentification sheets. Download these, and they will help you know what info is needed to determine both the history and the value of your Luger.

Recently there was an add in our classified section from an individual who was trying to sell a Luger that he had no interest in and needed the money. I inquired about it and after posting the add he became interested in the Luger, found ID on the holster (I believe) and somehow traced it back to the family of the person who carried it in the war. Guess what? He now realizes that selling it would not be a good idea. Funny how a non-collector can become a collector with the right circumstances. Although this is probably a once in a lifetime incident it does point out that anything is possible.

I have seen a soldier's record book (Soldbuch?) that indicated he was issued a K98 rifle and noted its serial number. Therefore, if you were fortunate enough to have both the K98 and his soldbuch, you would know the history of the rifle. Of course, this is pretty useless information as you almost never see such material together. On the other hand, it is possible that somewhere in Europe or Russia there is a museum of papers from WW2 Germany (as there is in Wash DC at the Natl Archives building) that includes some shipment information on lugers and such. Perhaps someone could check the Natl Archives some day and see what they have.

If the soldier didn't record the manufacturer's code and year of manufacturer, you still wouldn't know which rifle he had recorded.
