John and Hakan, Thanks for your input.

I used a UMAX Astra 3400 scanner with Adobe Photo Delux software. The Luger was covered with white bond paper for a uniform background, and scanned as a color photo.

I was also pleased with the way it came out and plan to scan other guns the same way. A cheapo digital camera is also available, but the scanner seems to have better light quality and produces better resolution than the camera.
