Back when I was younger and dumber I bought a U.S. Navy marked Victory model M&P at a buy and sell place. The guy gave me two boxes of hand loaded .38 Spec. with it. The first 5 rounds went something like POP, BANG, POP, CRACK,BOOM, the last round bowed the top strap cracked the crane and bent the ejector rod. I took it back to the store. The guy shrugged his shoulders and said "I didn't tell you they were safe to shoot."

I second that. Most handloads available with guns or for sale alone were loaded by amateurs and most amateurs load waaaaaaaay too hot. It's simply not worth the risk.
Think about it... people who know what they are doing do not sell their reloads, they use them. If they are for sale, chances are nearly 100% they are amateur loads (not counting companies that reload professionally; but personally I don't trust even them).

Sounds like a reload problem to me too - very easy to double or even triple charge pistol cases when using fast powders and progressive reloading equipment. The number one cause of blow-ups, beating out barrel obstructions, by my totally unscientific estimation.
