I recently noticed in the "WTS" topic a 1906 AE was sold for $1175. What would make a comparable restored Luger cost lets say, $1500, $2000 and $2200 as price points?
Pitting in the bore? grip condition? mag with same sn? What I'm looking for are, if there is such a thing, subtle differences that impact the price to that degree. |

I am unsure of your amounts you state and how they relate. Were some restored and others not?
I think on this board, it is when someone wants it and has the money ![]() Each person is different. A police weimar luger will be worth more to me in an interesting variation than probably most folks. Or, as maybe a better example; I came across sn 701 made by Simson & Co, Suhl. It is an undated example, and in "ok" shape. Why does it excite me? Because sn 1-700 were dated. This is sn 701, is not dated, and yet there have been "reports" of sn Simson's that are dated 1925, 1926, 1927 and 1928 (I do not beleive in the 1927 or 1928, and doubt anything after sn 700). Although not the end-all definate proof, having a non-dated that is sn 700 is a pretty good example to me that anything after it was not dated. It is unlikely to me that anything after would be dated (why would it be and this one is not?) Ed |

Ed, what if they told the night guy to stop dating them, but forgot to tell the day guy?
Or what if everybody knew, but they just thought they'd have some fun with future gun collectors who'd never be able to figure out why just a few guns got dated every year for a decade or so? Just my sadistic two cents.

nahhhh, we as collectors gots to draw the line at reason somewhere... I think you have to take the facts together:
From a small section of my database: 684 (dated) 701 (undated) 720 (undated) 922 (undated) 952 (undated) 1060 (dated) 1063 (undated as are the rest)) 1071 1177 1247 1255 1270 1278 1365 1443 1527 1561 1565 1573 (all undated) 1594 (dated) I have not looked at 1060 and 1594 in person, but have seen pictures of 1060. It is hard for me to beleive that a military accepted pistol would be allowed to be undated and be accepted. There were NO commericial Simson lugers made, so they should be dated until the gov't told them they were no longer required to be dated. Why this inexplicabily occured sometime after 684 (which I have examined) but before 701 (which I own) is unknown, but obviously happened. Ed |
