Strange spring above side plate 1916 DWM

My 1916 DWM, unfortunately refinished, has a flat spring riveted to the receiver that bears down on the top of the side plate. I happened to see a similar spring on another gun pictured in this website but I cannot find it again. What is this spring for, and was it put on by the factory? I am attempting to attach pictures for the first time so I hope this appears with the pictures.
