Hugh, I have done some stock repair on one of my rifles, had to move the bolt relief about 1/2" on a replacement stock. I found that by sanding some wood from inside the stock and mixing the dust with a clear glue such a Elmers or even model airplane cement and then filling the unwanted area with it I could get an almost unnoticeable repair after sanding and finishing. You might experiment with this method as you will be using the original wood for the repair and the colors should match.
