Default Mauser grip panels

Questions for the experts, I have a possible opportunity to buy a 1936 S/42, but the grip panels are not number to the pistol. Are 1936 S/42's grip panels supposed to be numbered?

I know I've read that it's not uncommon for S/42's to have non number grip panels. Is there any set pattern as far as what year and what types were number or not numbered?

I've been collecting Mauser's Luger's for about a year and the grip panels are the hardest for me to understand. Are there any books or info on Mauser P.08 grip panels?
