Noob question on loading the magazine

I bought an artillery shooter with an aftermarket magazine that I'm only able to load about 6 rounds in before the spring gets too hard for me to compress with a tool. I've heard mention of a tool in multiple posts on here but no explanation how it is supposed to be used.

I thought the slider on the magazine would provide enough leverage to load the magazine fully. Does it really require a tool?

Sorry for the noob question, but the only magazines I've needed a tool for up til now were hi-caps.
