Default Grips question

I have recently acquired a very nice 1938 S/42 with capture papers. It is all matching except the magazine. My questions regarding the grips are: first, the grips are not stamped with the serial # of the gun, but the right grip panel has the letter 'S' stamped into it. Is this a normal occurance? The grips certainly are original to the gun because of their condition and patina. Secondly, the fit of the grips to the gun are slightly oversize where they meet the front gripstrap. Is this normal or is this a problem that occurs from variation in frame size from gun to gun. Thanks for your interest!
