I have seen a soldier's record book (Soldbuch?) that indicated he was issued a K98 rifle and noted its serial number. Therefore, if you were fortunate enough to have both the K98 and his soldbuch, you would know the history of the rifle. Of course, this is pretty useless information as you almost never see such material together. On the other hand, it is possible that somewhere in Europe or Russia there is a museum of papers from WW2 Germany (as there is in Wash DC at the Natl Archives building) that includes some shipment information on lugers and such. Perhaps someone could check the Natl Archives some day and see what they have.
