Default Stripping and re-painting an Erma .22 Luger

I have an Erma La-22 that actually works some of the time. The finish is mostly worn off of the zinc or whatever type of pot-metal they made these out of. I was wondering if anyone had managed to strip the old paint and redo one of these.
I would hate to try to strip off the paint and have the gun melt or dissolve.

Thanx,

Mike
