rk, You're pretty much on the money. You shouldn't have edited. You were correct.

Steinar,

A Registered Parcel(package) goes by Registered mail. Registered mail is the most secure form of mailing an article.

It travels in a locked pouch and has to be accounted for at each point where it will be processed.

When mailed, the clerk lists the number in a "manifold"(registry book).
It is then locked in a safe that only one person has accesss to(the register clerk).

When it is ready to be dispatched it is placed in a locked pouch. The driver who picks it up to take it to the next processing point signs for it. When that person delivers it to that processing point, the person he gives it to also signs for it. Each time it changes hands, it is signed for.

This way it can be traced back to the last person to have it. Thereby making them accountable for it.

The most secure way to send very valuable or irreplacable items.

In 32 yrs I know of only one instance where a registered article was stolen. Two Postal clerks and their supervisor were on their way to a Federal prison about two weeks after it happened. A "Moronic" attempt to steal registered Gov't Treasury Bills.

US Postal Inspectors are not anybody to mess with. Scarey Dudes!!

Parcel is just another word for package.

I hope I have made this easy to understand.

Ron (32 "Glorious" years with USPS)
