Post White Lacquer Stick

I'm going to be photographing some of my pistols and have been advised that using white lacquer stick will make the markings stand out well. I've never done this before and have a few questions:
1) Where can I get this? A brand name would be useful as I'm in the UK and it may not be readily available.
2) I assume that it doesn't damage the pistol?
3) How do I get it off afterwards?
Any advice would be much appreciated.
