A subtitle on page 596 of Sturgess says: "The Mauser Tonne (Barrel) Trademark". I cannot find that Tonne translates to Barrel in any reference, to include my native German, German speaking, wife. All translate Tonne to Ton, as a measure of weight.
A number of references, Sturgess and Hallock to name a couple, say the logo, as registered by Mauser in 1909 using the word Tonne, represents a barrel of gun powder and the vertical lines the staves. With that, "Mauser Barrel" would be the proper term for the logo, rather than "Mauser Banner". Can anyone clear this Tonne, Barrel thing up for me? Jack |
