1916 Navy Luger

Hello: I could use some information if possible. I have a 1916 Navy Luger with a medallion or coin inletted into the left grip. It is an eagle with a couple of letters on the bottom. Has anyone seen anything like this? It looks to have been there for a very long time and was done by a professional. Any help would be appreciated.
